Sophie turned turned 50 in July 2024 and in true mid-life crisis style wanted to find a challenge that acknowledged the landmark. It came in the form of The Mongol Derby. This is an endurance horse race – with an entry in the Guiness Book of Records as the world’s longest multi horse race.

About the event

The race covers 1000km of the Mongolian Steppe, with horse changes every 30-40km. Competitors ride from 7am to 7pm and can spend nights at horse stations, camp under the stars, or enjoy the hospitality of local Mongolian herders who welcome strangers into their tents for food and shelter.

The experience was extraordinary, as promised—long and tough. The horses varied from lovely to challenging. I finished in nine days, feeling immense relief at the finish line. It's a treasured memory, but I hope never to ride a Mongolian horse again!
