Classical Guitar Evening £230

A fabulous evening presented by the young and highly talented Kristian Richardson.  Pieces from all round the world, with background on each piece, delighted the audience.  With some extra pieces added in during the Q & A at the end.. We wish Kristian all the best with his Recital and look forward to welcoming him back to Broadlands later in the year.

Waitrose Raises £380

Waitrose Winchester has donated £380 to Broadlands through their Community Matters fund.  We were proposed by Alice Lowry, a Saturday helper, from St Swithun’s School Winchester. Thank you to Alice and Waitrose, and all who shop with you.

Golf Day 2010

Again we had super conditions and the course was playing beautifully. Everyone was back in the Clubhouse for lunch at 16:00, a tasty rack of lamb on sweet potato followed by steaming hot crumble and custard. Our thanks to the donors for the Silent Auction, specifically Sony UK and Wisley Foundation and to Blackmoor Golf Club for making us all welcome. Results cards to follow soon.

Rowan’s First RDA Session

Continuing his training Rowan has been out and about riding but also following RDA riders around the grounds and learning the ropes.  He certainly knows when breakfast time is as he is waiting at the gate to come straight down.  Today he had the opportunity to see how ‘enjoyable’ a lesson could be.  Pictures

Haggis Feast aids the Riding School

The skirl o’ the pipes, wild dancing to an accordion and drum band, songs and poetry - where else could it be but Alton’s Burns Night Supper in honour of the great Scottish poet, Robert Burns.  The evening raised £400 for this year’s chosen local charity, Broadlands Group, riding for the Disabled, now in its 55th year at Medstead - full article and pictures in Alton Herald 29 Jan 2010.

Four Marks & Medstead Rotary £360 cheque presentation

Rotary members collected at the Windmill Inn carol singing evening and outside Read’s butchers on 23/24 December whilst offering festive good cheer, hot chocolate and bacon sandwiches courtesy of Read’s and Rumours cafe.  It is hope to expand on this annual charitable event with a more significant fundraising Christmas event outside Read’s next year.  Picture

How to cope in the Snow - Whilst the Snow and cold is settled in the winter strategy has kicked in.  The feed room heater is on and the water is off until needed and then drained back to prevent any burst pipes. The ponies are happy and feeding well, plenty to skip out!  Some pictures of them foraging and eating.

Alresford Rotary Support Shepherds Down School- On Monday evening Martin Leydon, Shepherds Down School Teacher, and Nigel Hoppitt, Broadlands Chair, were presented with a cheque for £500 at The Swan Inn. Alresford,  by Alresford Rotary.  This will be used to buy riding  hats for the children of Shepherds Down School. Picture.

Sony UK select Broadlands as a charity partner - The Sony Engage programme allows staff 3 paid charity days to assist with charitable work.  During 2009 employees of Sony UK completed some tasks at Broadlands; painting a Field Shelter, helping with a lesson and creating the fabulous DVD - See What a Horse Can Do... and have chosen us as a partner for 2010, so they can assist with more activities throughout the year.  Thanks  to the Sony Engage Team and we look forward working with you.

Boogie for Broadlands in Medstead - a complete sell out for people to see local resident musician Tony Humphrys.  The dance floor was busy all night, the evening raised £310 with £160 coming from the raffle.  The Ploughman’s supper was fresh and tasty, the company superb and the music incredible. See the pictures....

Round Up Dinner Dance at Medstead Village Hall was well attended with a licensed bar and music by Rapier.  Feedback includes: “what a fantastic night”, “food was fabulous”, “company was great”, “music was very loud but very good”.............  Total raised £2,000 to help to fund the new Pony Rowan a beautiful 15hh Connemara starting his training to become an RDA Pony.

Unfortunately we had to say good bye to Fossie who had been at Broadlands for 17yrs.  He was a wonderful old chap full of character and love for the riders.  He will be missed.

Our inaugural Golf Day was held at the beautiful Blackmoor Golf Club and 44 players enjoyed the fabulous weather for a great day of golf.   The raffle was well subscribed with super prizes and the silent auction helped to push the total raised to £3,500.  The Hazzards were the winning team and each gained a Calvin Klein Original Windbreaker.

Fun in the Park, blessed yet again with beautiful weather the Tombola and cake tables were ready early, the horses and riders turned out immaculately and demonstrated Polo and Trek.  Many rosettes were handed out for the excellent and competitive riding.  The new pony, Rowan a beautiful Dapple Grey 5 year old Connemara, was introduced to the Four Marks and Medstead Rotary Group who are raising the funds to enable Broadlands to purchase him.  The Ashley Cup was awarded to Chloe Larby as the most improved rider throughout the year.
